Inkjet Vs. Lab Photos

The convenience of software and being able to download photos from a camera makes inkjet printing of images appealing. However, users discover there are some significant differences between inkjet-produced photos and professional printing from a lab.

Cost of Prints

The toner of inkjet printers produces the major cost with this type of image production. A toner cartridge may only cost $10 to $13, as of 2010. However, many color printers require at least four base colors. Lab printing costs between 20 cents to 50 cents per print in 2010.

Ease of Production

With Internet-based services available that send photos to a nearby convenience store, the only work involved in lab printing is choosing the prints, paying the cost and picking up the photos. Inkjet involves running the printing process image by image and providing space to allow prints to dry properly. This can become inconvenient when printing a large number of photos.

Quality

Inkjet images are only as good as the printer that produces them. If the ink level malfunctions or the printer heads skip, you see the lines in the print and discoloration. Lab photos are produced with silver halide. The prints meet archival demands and don't deteriorate immediately if exposed to moisture.
