Advertisers use male models every day to promote a vast variety of products to both men and women. The iconic images of the male Calvin Klein underwear models are a clear example of how effective marketing campaigns featuring male models can be. Certain techniques can help make sure that your shots of male models turn out as effective as possible.
Square to the Camera
His broad shoulders highlight the masculinity of a male model. Try to get shots in which the shoulders are squared to you. This gives the model a presence that might be lost if you shoot too much from an angle. Even if the head is turned to create angles in the face, the more you can square the shoulders up in the shot, the more powerful the model will look.
Muscles and the Face
Many shots of male models are meant to show off the various muscle groups. Depending on the model and the shots required, this could include the legs, abs, pectorals, arms or any of several other muscle groups. When a shot focuses on these areas, the model should be prepared and flex the muscles in that area to make them stand out. Coach the model to flex the muscles while leaving the face relaxed. Otherwise, flexing may cause a facial expression that is distorted, unnatural and simply not right for the shot.
Light
The light used to shoot male models depends on what look you are seeking in the photo. For a generalized portrait, the usual soft lighting that looks good in all portraits is advisable. However, iIf showing clearly defined muscles is important in your shot, direct lighting -- much harsher than you would use for other portraits -- helps to create shadows. This deepens the definition of the muscles and makes them pop in the photos.
Sharpness Versus Softness
Men of all shapes and sizes have masculine characteristics, so showcase this in your shots. Keep straight lines and sharp angles in mind when photographing men. Play with straight lines in your poses, your backgrounds and your props. This opposes nicely to how women naturally fit into soft and curvy poses and settings.
