How to Edit a Photo Exposure

Cameras create images by exposing light to a light-sensitive medium like photographic film or a digital light sensor. This process creates an "exposure" which can often appear too dark or too light. Too much light in the exposure will produce an overly bright, "washed out" look, while too little light in the exposure will make much of the image too dark to see. Even after you take the photo, the photo's exposure can still be edited, bringing an overly bright or dark image back to the normal range.

Instructions

    1

Open the image you wish to edit with the photo editing software of your choice.

    2

Create a new layer from the background image.

    3

Click on the "Levels" button to apply a levels adjustment to the layer.

    4

Read the histogram in the "Levels" interface. The histogram represents the light information in the image as a waveform, with shadows at the left to highlights at the right. A well-balanced exposure will have peaks approximately evenly from left to right.

    5

Slide the black slider arrow to the right until it reaches the base of the first peak on the left of the waveform.

    6

Slide the white slider arrow to the left until it reaches the base of the first peak on the right of the waveform.

    7

Slide the gray triangle slider to the right to lighten the image.

    8

Slide the gray triangle slider to the left to darken the image. "Do you need to know digital photography methods that deliver experienced photographers to where they are today? 10

Enter a file name for the image file and click "Save" to save the file.
