How to Photograph Statues

Statues make an excellent subject for both the beginning and experienced photographer due to their stationary immutability and constant nature. The same statue seen from different angles can be a different experience for the viewer, which challenges the photographer to find the best way to depict the sculpture. Additionally, as works of art themselves, statues have their own intrinsic qualities that make them visually and emotionally compelling. A skilled photographer can capture a statue's artistic message while also conveying his own message through a photograph.

Instructions

    1

Walk around the statue, looking at it from all angles. Because a statue is a three-dimensional object, it can be seen from many different angles, with each viewpoint representing a different photograph. Take into special account what can be seen behind the statue, as this will likely show up in your photograph.

    2

Choose a vantage point from which to photograph the statue. Frequently, this viewpoint will capture the main part of the statue, such as the face when working with a statue of a person. For an abstract sculpture, this is less important, and you need not photograph the statue from a conventional angle if there is a better one available.

    3

Set your camera up on your tripod, if you are using one, at your chosen vantage point.

    4

Frame your image of the statue. In most cases, the image will include the entirety of the statue with a small space at the top of the frame, accommodating the whole piece. Again, however, there are no hard-and-fast rules, so if you see a more aesthetically pleasing composition, capture that.

    5

Adjust your camera's aperture and exposure settings in order to get a properly exposed image with the depth-of-field effects you desire. Remember: An aperture with a lower number produces more background blur and vice-versa, which can be especially helpful when your background is a busy road or something that doesn't work in the photograph.

    6

Step back from the camera to avoid shaking it when you capture the image. "Do you want to know digital photography methods that carry professional photographers to where they are today? If you are using a shutter release, connect it now if it is not already connected.

    7

Press the shutter release carefully, being careful not to jostle or shake the camera, which could change your carefully chosen composition.

    8

Repeat the same process for any other vantage points you want to capture.
