Tips on Photographing Plus Size

Plus size photography must capture the full figure model in a positive manner, without highlighting negative physical characteristics. The photographer uses the camera angle, shot composition, ambient lighting, set design and wardrobe choices to enhance the image of the plus size model. Many full figure models can tell a photographer her physical strengths and weaknesses. The photographer should take these strong and weak attributes into consideration, working with the model to emphasize her best qualities.

A plus size model can be photogenic from every angle or more photogenic from specific types of angles. A photographer should review the model's portfolio or a family album, to see which photos of the individual are most complimentary. Avoid side angles that tend to capture a double-chin or extended mid-section. A straight-forward shot may best capture the model's strong facial features and compliment her full figure. Alternatively, the model can turn or lean directly into the camera. Shoot from high angles down and not from low angles up.

The purpose of the photography shoot often determines the type of shot to be used. The shot may vary from an extreme close-up to a full length shot. An extreme close-up of a plus size model's face can distort the definition and angles in her face. This type of shot can add uncomplimentary pounds to the plus size model's image. An alternative to an extreme close-up of a plus size model's face includes a tighter shot of a specific feature such as the eyes or lips. Alternatively, expand the head shot and include the model's shoulders and upper body. Consider a full length shot sitting in a chair or lounging on a sofa, instead of simply standing.

Lighting helps give the plus size model's face and features definition. Flat lighting or an over-exposed image can make a plus size model look larger with less defined features. Avoid bright white rooms or direct sunlight without contrast. Place the model in front of a solid bright sun umbrella for an outdoor shoot. Indoors, start with minimal light and add directional light sources. Use a key light to light the model and a background light to create dimension. Place the key light at an angle and allow it to create contrast.

The model's wardrobe choices are critical to a successful photo shoot. The model's attire must fit perfectly. Avoid clothes that appear too tight or too loose. Tight clothes make it difficult for the model to pose comfortably. Loose clothes can make the plus size model look larger. Avoid prints, unless that is the desired look. Ask a model to bring several wardrobe changes if she is providing her own clothes. Allow time for her to model all of the outfits before the photo shoot begins. Use veils, colorful scarves or large jewelery to add character and distract from heavy necklines.
