Image editing software, which ranges from simple programs that come pre-installed on personal computers to more advanced professional products, allows users to modify their images in a variety of ways.

Image editing software is available from a variety of sources. Most computer manufacturers include an image editing program, either as part of their basic software bundle or as an optional program. This includes programs like Microsoft Paint, Apple iPhoto and Hewlett Packard Image Zone. Beyond the basics offered by these applications, many printers or digital cameras also come with imaging software, such as Nikon Capture and Kodak EasyShare.

More advanced professional tools are also available from third-party program designers. The most well known of these is Adobe's Creative Suite, which is a continuously updated package of digital image editing programs that includes Adobe Photoshop.

Basic Functions

All image editing software contains some of the same basic tools. Besides being able to import a variety of file types, these editing features include resizing and cropping images. Basic tools also include the ability to manipulate a photograph's color (such as removing red eye), to render it in black and white, and to reverse or flip the image. Such basic functions are useful for touching up or reframing photos. Resizing an image can be useful in creating images that have a smaller file size and, therefore, take up less space on a computer's hard drive.

More complex image editing programs contain additional tools that perform more complex tasks.
