Selling photography on the Internet allows photographers to reach the widest, most targeted audience possible. Gone are the days when you had to have a gallery or put on shows in order to sell your photography. Within the realm of e-commerce, there are several options for photographers interested in selling their work online. Depending on your specific needs and interests, there is an online photography marketplace that will work for you.

Stock Photography Companies

In recent years, "microstock" photography sites have begun to spring up online. Like typical stock photography sites such as Getty Images, photographers sell the rights to their photos online to people looking to use them for commercial purposes, and receive a portion of the revenue when/if their picture sells. Microstock photography is different in that the photos are cheaper and usually not of professional quality. This has allowed amateur photographers to break into the market and sell their photos. Each microstock site has their own submission standards, and many are strict on what they will take. Aim to sell them photos that are original, fit a niche market, or are of things that their customers typically request (this information can usually be found on their sites in the submission guidelines sections). Some of these sites also give you access to the most popular stock images, so you can get an idea of what sells best. Some microstock photography sites include iStockphoto, Dreamstime and ShutterStock.

Online Craft Communities

In addition to selling the rights to your photos, you can sell your actual photos to people looking for interesting photographs to use as art, to decorate their homes, or for collecting. There are a few online craft communities/marketplaces such as Etsy.com and FreeCraftFair.com that allow you to easily set up your own virtual shop where you can sell your photos. Typically, these sites are free, but take a small portion of the revenue when you sell something. Read each site's rules and restrictions carefully. There are also marketplaces dedicated solely to art, including photography, such as Fine-Art.com.

Create Your Own Site

Creating your own site is another good way to sell your photographs. There are several website templates available through companies such as Folio Twist. By using templates that are designed for artists and photographers who want to display and sell their work, you don't have to know a lot about IT or creating a site--many of these templates and solutions are self-explanatory.
