There are many file types users can choose from when formatting images. Two of the most widely used are bitmap (.bmp) and JPEG (.jpg or .jpeg). Each format is useful for certain types of images.

What is a JPEG?

JPEG is a method of compressing color or grayscale images. The file extension stands for Joint Photographic Experts Group, after the committee that wrote the standard. The JPEG compression method takes advantage of the human eye, which has trouble perceiving small changes in color and losses to certain information, in order to reduce the file size. The file type is best for photographs or realistic artwork.

What is a BMP?

A BMP is also referred to as a bitmap, which is a type of uncompressed graphic. Specifically, it is a map of bits that form a complete image. Bits are ones and zeros that computers use to store information. Each bit refers to a pixel and it tells the computer screen what color the pixel should be.

Advantages of JPEG

The JPEG compression method can reduce an original file size by one-tenth to one-twentieth. The reduced file size is especially useful for images that will be displayed over the web.

Advantages of BMP

Bitmap images store a tremendous amount of information, or bits, and allows the monitor to display images that are very close to the original. It is also easy to edit BMP images pixel by pixel with image editing software. Many logos and icons are saved as bitmaps.

Disadvantages

The JPEG file type is not lossless, which means the compressed file can't be restored to the original image. The resolution for BMP formats is fixed, so resizing bitmaps can result in distorted images. Bitmaps are typically larger in size than JPEG images.
