Time lapse photography is the process of setting a camera in a single position and then taking photos every few seconds or minutes. The images are then compiled into a video that functions much like an animated clip, where all the activity that took place during the time of photography flashes by at high speed. Time lapse is a common technique in many art photography classes and projects. Fortunately, performing the technique is not complicated.

Instructions

    1

Choose a photography subject that provides you with the aesthetic and effect that you're looking for. A city has movement and changing light throughout an evening, and a caged tiger is guaranteed to stay in frame if you set the camera so the enclosure is fully captured by the lens. The possibilities are endless, so use your imagination.

    2

Place your camera on a tripod to hold it perfectly still during the shooting. If the frame changes even slightly, the effect of the time lapse is compromised. Avoid photographing in heavy winds for this reason.

    3

Take a picture with the camera so you know how it looks. Switch the camera into "manual" mode and then adjust the settings on your camera to achieve the visual effect you want. This allows you to change how bright the shot is, add any effects and switch the coloring. Take another test shot once you've adjusted the camera to verify you're getting the initial shot you want.

    4

Hook up an intervalometer to the camera. The intervalometer is a timer that determines how frequently the camera takes pictures during the time lapse. Each camera model differs slightly, so check your manual to verify the intervalometer is hooked up correctly. Program it to the interval you want. Some time lapses take several photos per second, while others take one an hour. Typically, the longer the interval you program between pictures, the longer the camera will be in position to get a large number of photos over time.

    5

Return after a set amount of time to pick up the camera. It should have taken pictures at the regular interval you set up until you stopped it.
