An ugly family portrait can haunt your closet for years. It becomes an expensive memory of your family that you would rather forget. Although there are many elements out of your control, one thing you can look into is color ideas for your dress and background. The right color coordinating can make all the difference.
Ask Your Photographer
If you have set up a portrait shoot with a local photographer, ask them about what colors she tends to use. Certain photographers have a preference when it comes to the color of background and foreground elements. Sending a previous photo of your family will help the photographer make suggestions on what colors would work best for your family.
Study the Color Wheel
There are many colors that compliment skin tones. Using color within the same color palette can help show unification and highlights faces. According to HP, wearing clothes within the same color hue will take the focus away from what each member in the family is wearing and place the focus back on each member in the photo. Also using bright colors such as blue, red or green will allow your family's portrait to not look washed out. Lighter colors can unintentionally fade a picture because these aren't vibrant colors.
Black and White
Selecting a pure black or white color scheme can be very classic. Like greek marble statues, some artistic black and white photos hold up because of the lack of color. The color doesn't date the photograph with faded colors. Instead it allows the focus to be on the individual family members. Also, having your family don pure white clothes on a white background will eliminate the distraction of individual color.
