How to Take Dramatic Photos

It takes a sharp eye, creativity and the occasional happy accident to get great dramatic photographs. While digital photography allows for the possibility of amazing shots, the richness of a film camera lends itself to a unique photographic look. Although dramatic photos can be created using photo editing software, the authenticity of capturing the photo in real time is unmatched. The best way to get great photographs is to simply take lots of pictures.

Instructions

    1

Select an interesting subject. The more interesting the focus of your camera, the more likely you are to find a unique way of shooting it. Landscapes, sporting events and animals all make inherently interesting subjects. A candid portrait can also hold dramatic potential depending on how you choose to shoot it.

    2

Find a dynamic location to photograph. This is one of the reasons landscapes make for such appealing subjects. Deserts, oceans, hillsides, canyons and forests can be photographed in unique ways. The sunlight creates constantly changing images in locations such as these all through the day. The time between day and night -- twilight -- is a favorite for photographers because of the mix of colors in the sky. If you are filming live subjects, pay attention to the background. What is going on around your subject should have as much to do with the photo as the object of your focus.

    3

Choose good lighting. You can use artificial light or natural light. With artificial light you have more control over how it will look in the finished photograph. These can be studio lights that you arrange however you want, or lights that exist at your shooting location, such as street lights, building and shop lights or billboards. Natural light is simply sunlight. Natural light creates a wide array of dramatic imagery. Side lighting casts long shadows, while back lighting creates silhouettes. Hard lighting and spot lighting create hard shadows and high contrast for extreme dramatic effect. Any type of lighting can be combined to achieve an interesting look.

    4

Shoot your subjects in motion. Candid photos lend themselves to looking dynamic simply because they are unstaged. Anything running, flying, swimming or jumping can be made to look dynamic.

    5

Decide whether to shoot in color or black and white. The use of color plays a role in creating dynamic photos. What you choose to emphasize and how it is framed can create visual interest. Almost anything shot in black and white will look dynamic due to the amount of shadow and highlights inherent in this type of photography.

    6

Add filters and effects to your camera. Filters are lenses that attach to the main lens of a film camera. They are available in various colors, diffuses and lens effects. Digital cameras sometimes have built-in effects or downloadable programs that mimic real filters to create effects.
