A Canon 580EX and 580EX II are capable of emitting a beam of red light called an AF-Assist Beam that can help most Canon DSLR cameras to focus in extremely dark conditions, or in situations where the lighting and contrast are very flat. In many cases, this burst of red light is typically followed by a flash from the 580EX's head once the shutter is depressed. However, it is possible to use just the AF-Assist beam without engaging the flash. "Are you looking to discover digital photography approaches that deliver expert photographers to where they are today? Well, The Top Secret Photography Techniques might assist you out in doing so. To find spectacular images we first need to look at some essential photography techniques. The most important one I am able to share with you is discover about light. You can discover everything about photography techniques on , The Top Secret Photography Techniques. Whenever you discover about light and in what technique it interacts with the direct environment then your images will get much better..". This will allow for more natural exposure in some situations and is a useful tool for focusing in difficult lighting.

Instructions

    1

Turn on your Canon SLR. Select the second "Custom Functions" tab, which is indicated in yellow with a white wrench symbol. Scroll down through the options and select "Flash Control."

    2

Select "Flash Firing" in the "Flash Control" menu and set it to "Disable." This will prevent the Canon 580EX from engaging a flash but will allow use of the AF-Assist Beam.

    3

Exit the menu system. Slide the Canon 580EX into your Canon DSLR's hot shoe and lock the flash into place. Turn on the flash and check that the DSLR is also on. Attempt to focus on an item within a few feet and depress the shutter halfway. You should see a visible red beam emitted from your flash onto the subject. Take a photo once the DSLR has acquired focus. The focus should be noticeably more accurate and more quickly acquired than without the AF-Assist Beam, and there should be no hint of flash lighting on the object.
