Time-lapse photography is the process of taking incremental photos over a span of several minutes to several days and splicing them all together to watch something that normally happens relatively slowly, happening quickly instead. Blooming flowers, sunrises, sunsets and caterpillar into butterfly transitions are examples. With a digital camera and the right software anyone can create a time-lapse video. The key to time-lapse photography is keeping your camera still throughout the entire process. Slight movement can ruin the effect or blur the picture.

Set up your camera. Use a tripod or another stable surface. Secure your camera to the surface so that it will not move at all during the filming period.
2Calculate the number of pictures you want. Most films contain 20 to 30 frames per second (FPS). An increase in frames per second means a smoother film. Determine the FPS you want and the length you prefer for you film. Multiply the film length in seconds by the FPS rate to determine the total number of pictures to take. For example, 24 FPS X 180 seconds (3 minute film) = 2880 pictures.
3Calculate the interval between pictures. Estimate the length of the event you plan to shoot in real time. Divide the number of total pictures by the number of minutes in this period. Set your camera, intervalometer or timer for this interval.
4Take the pictures at the set interval. Most digital cameras include an option to take pictures at set intervals. Check your user manual for this feature. If your camera does not offer this feature, you will need an intervalometer which will take the pictures for you, or you will need to manually take each shot you want.
5Transfer your photos to your computer. Most computers recognize your camera and ask if you want to download or transfer the files to your computer once you plug the camera in via USB cable.
6Edit your photos with your favorite photo editing software. Some of the photos may need some minor editing regarding focus or lighting to ensure a smooth movie.
7Combine your photos into a movie. You will need animating software. Some of your options are Quicktime pro ($30), Animagic GIF Animator (free trial, $29 to keep), IrfanView (free) and Ulead GIF Animator (about $45). Read the instructions included with the software to create a video from a series of still photos. Most of these options are timeline-based, meaning you simply drag the images onto the timeline one after another.
