How to Write a Good Photography Artist Statement

Every photographer needs a strong artist statement to accompany his or her work. This statement is a testimony of your experiences as an artist, and serves to answer questions for the people interacting with your art. It is an introduction to your work, which is essential to foster a better understanding of your purpose and goals as an artist. The artist statement is your chance to explain your creative choices to someone who may be unfamiliar with your work.

Instructions

    1

Write in first person, using "I" statements and the present tense. Write in a conversational tone that is down to earth and easy to read. Avoid being vague in your explanations. Good writing is specific. Keep your statement to three to five paragraphs. You don't want to lose the attention of your reader with too long a piece.

    2

Explain why you are a photographer. Talk about the things that compel you to continue working on your craft. Tell your reader why you love photography and what it means to you. You might discuss how you became a photographer in the first place.

    3

Write about patterns in your work such as particular subjects or themes. Tell the reader what the significance of these themes is, and why they should care about them too.

    4

Talk about your process. Maybe you have a unique way of lighting your subject, or a method of developing film that impacts the look of your work.

    5

Discuss your current work. Explain what you are attempting to accomplish, and what you hope your pieces communicate.
