Artificial backdrops allow photographers to create a variety of looks for portrait and studio photography. Professional portrait photographers often use seamless paper or fabric backdrops made of muslin or canvas to attract the viewer's eye directly to the subject. Each material provides the chance to manipulate unique textures, colors and reflective qualities. In addition to seamless paper and different fabric backdrops, some photographers prefer vinyl or other materials.
Seamless Paper
True to its name, seamless paper provides a solid background that curves to meet the ground under the subject's feet. This curve prevents the distracting line that otherwise forms in the background of a full-length shot. Catalog and commercial photographers often rely exclusively on seamless paper to make advertising materials look clean and uniform. Retailers offer seamless paper backgrounds in more than 50 colors and in a range of sizes. Photographers can use stands to mount one end of the seamless paper, or simply tack or tape one end to a wall. When the paper becomes soiled, torn or wrinkled, photographers simply rip off the soiled portion and unroll a fresh piece. Due to its significant bulk, seamless paper does not travel well.
Muslin Backdrop
A lighter fabric backdrop of muslin offers photographers the lightest and most easily transported photography background. Muslin does not require a sophisticated mounting systems, and photographers can drape, wrap and tack fabric on walls and furniture. Many photographers find the wrinkles that muslin fabric backdrops develop increase the expense and labor involved in a shoot, as they must dedicate additional time to ironing the backdrop or incur the expense of a dry cleaner's services. Other photographers appreciate the texture of wrinkled muslin, and many commercially available backdrops now feature wrinkles prominently as part of the design.
Canvas Backdrop
Photographers who need to use a flash or bright lights during a shoot sometimes select a fabric backdrop made of canvas because its matte finish subtly absorbs rather than obviously reflects strong lights. Canvas backdrops fold and store easily in large plastic containers, or photographers can leave the canvas hanging on mounts to maintain its shape. Photographers can create a multitude of colored effects by using color-gelled strobes.
Other Backdrops
During photo shoots that require getting wet or making a mess, vinyl backdrops provide an easily cleaned option. Like seamless paper backgrounds, vinyl can curve under the feet for a seamless final product. Similar to canvas backgrounds, a vinyl background's matte finish prevents distorted reflections in bright lights.
