Semi-Gloss Vs. Glossy Photo Paper

Before digital cameras, most of us didn't have to think about differences between semi-gloss or glossy photo paper. You took your film to your local photo-processing outlet and picked up the pictures later. These days, however, you have more control over the process, and choosing the photo paper that best suits your needs is part of that process.

Characteristics of Semi-Gloss Photo Paper

For many snapshot artists, semi-gloss photo paper is the photo paper of choice for a number of specific characteristics. Semi-gloss paper features a fairly shiny surface that does a good job of reflecting light. It also allows for a balance of vibrant colors and deep textured colors for a more accurate reproduction of reality.

Characteristics of Glossy Photo Paper

Glossy photo paper, as the name implies, offers the highest level of glossy surface. This provides a very shiny look that many people prefer. It reflects light better than semi-gloss photo paper and does a better job at bringing out bright colors. Glossy photo paper tend to be the default paper at pharmacies and other photo development locations.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Semi-Gloss Photo Paper

The biggest advantage of semi-gloss photo paper is its balance between overall aesthetic and practical nature. Semi-gloss paper does a good job at replicating colors across the entire spectrum. It is also less resistant to accumulating dust or fingerprints, making it ideal for pictures that will be handled often. The notable knock on semi-gloss is that it lacks the overall pop that characterizes glossy photo paper.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Glossy Photo Paper

If you are looking for pictures that pop, glossy photo paper is the way to go. The reproduction of vibrant colors is unmatched in other types of photo paper. These characteristics make glossy photo paper the preferred choice for framing, holiday cards and other pieces meant for show rather than handling. The downside of glossy photo paper, however, is that its shiny surface can sometimes make it difficult to view in very well-lit areas. It is also the photo paper that is most susceptible to gathering dust and fingerprints.
