Digital images are easily manipulated with photo editing software. One of the most common editing techniques is cropping. By trimming off a portion of a photo, the subject matter appears closer than in the original photo. Cropping into a person with a full-length view means the final image will show them from head to toe. A three-quarters view will show the subject from their waist to the top of their head. Both styles of cropping are popular for photos to be framed, scrap-booked or displayed on a personal website.

Instructions

    1

Make a copy of the photo to be cropped. Start by opening the original image to be cropped, duplicate it and save the duplicate with a new file name. Add a numeral or the word "crop" after the file name. Close the original image, and work with the new file. If you make a mistake while cropping, you can always use an undo feature or repeat this step.

    2

Set the parameters on your photo editing software cropping tool. Select a dimension proportionate to a common print size. Standard photo album prints are usually 4 inches by 6 inches.

    3

Use the crop tool. Hold the tool over the image and click the mouse button to start the outline of the cropping area on the image. Drag the mouse in a vertical or rectangular shape to perform the crop.

    4

Start at the top left of the subject's head for a three quarters crop. Drag the mouse to the right, and down, until you reach the subject's waist. If you like the composition for the image, press "Enter" to complete the crop. If the crop is not preferred, click outside the crop box to undo the selection, and begin this step again.

    5

Crop the subject to a full-length view. Place the crop tool to the top left of the subject's head and drag the mouse to the right and down until you have just passed the bottom of the subject's feet. Release the mouse button and view the selection. If it looks the way you want, press "Enter" to complete the crop.

    6

Try creating full length and three quarters crops several ways. Use the crop tool to make the image vertical or horizontal. Place the subject off center, or perfectly in the middle of the frame. Crop to include some of the background, or isolate the subject.
