Instructions for a Flash Meter

The "Flash Meter" is a photo light meter manufactured by Minolta that combines incident light measurement and reflected light measurement in one unit. The meter has an incident light receptor and a spot measurement view finder next to the power button. It is powered by a single AA battery loaded in the battery chamber on the bottom right of the meter on the same side as the power button. The meter automatically checks the battery each time you push the power button.

Instructions

    Set film speed by depressing the "ISO" button on the bottom of the Flash Meter while turning the "Up/Down" dial. Turning the dial up increases the film speed in 1/3 stop increments. Turning the dial down decreases film speed.

    Use the spherical diffuser when performing incident light measurements of three-dimensional objects. Attach the spherical diffuser to the Flash Meter by turning it clockwise. Remove the diffuser by turning it counterclockwise.

    Position the meter near your subject and point the spherical diffuser at the camera to take an incident light measurement.

    Take a spot measurement by standing near the camera and looking into the viewfinder on the front of the meter. Aim the viewfinder at the subject and press the spot measurement button on the side of the meter next to the viewfinder.

    Measure ambient light by pressing the "Mode" button on the meter until the meter display reads "AMBI."

    Set the desired shutter speed by turning the "Up/Down" dial. Turning the dial up increases shutter speed. Turning the dial down slows shutter speed.

    Press the incident measurement button, on the opposite side of the meter from the spot measurement button. Read the f number (focal length number) on the meter display and set your camera's f-stop to that number.

    Measure flash or strobe light by pressing the "Mode" button until the meter display reads "CORD." Attach the flash sync cord to the meter's sync terminal on the bottom of the meter.

    Select the desired shutter speed by turning the "Up/Down" dial. Press either the incident measurement button or the spot measurement button.

    Read the f number on the meter display and set your camera's f-stop to that number.
