How to Shoot in Manual Mode With Pentax K100D

The Pentax K100D is a popular entry-level digital single-lens reflex (SLR) camera designed for both amateurs and intermediate photographers. It is loaded with features found in more expensive SLR cameras. It has various shooting modes, including one that automates all the settings for easy shooting. It also has a mode that allows full manual control in setting the shutter speed and aperture to capture pictures in more creative ways.

Instructions

    1

Set the mode dial located on the top left side of the Pentax K100D camera body to "M" (manual).

    2

Set the ISO setting, which controls the camera sensor's sensitivity to light. Press the "Fn" button next to the LCD monitor and choose in the ISO menu a setting between ISO 200 and ISO 3200, depending on the brightness of the surroundings. Set it to ISO 200 when shooting bright scenes. Use a higher ISO when shooting in darker surroundings, such as indoors.

    3

Turn the "e-dial" on the top right side of the Pentax K100D camera to adjust the shutter speed. Choose a higher value to "freeze" the motion of a moving subject. On the other hand, if you want to enhance the effect of motion--such as showing blurriness in a moving subject--choose a lower value.

    4

Turn the "e-dial" while pressing the "AV" button to adjust the aperture. Choose a higher value to get a wide range of focus from the foreground to the background of the image. Choose a lower value to capture a sharply focused subject in the foreground with a blurred background.

    5

Set the focus mode lever to "MF" (manual focus) when you don't want to use auto focus or in situations when the auto focus is difficult to use, such as dimly lit subjects, fast-moving objects, bright backgrounds and multiple subjects in the focusing area.
