Dos & Don'ts During Photography

Photography can be a technical and tricky skill to learn. There are a number of helpful tips, however, to keep in mind whenever you are photographing that will help you take better photos.

Lighting is one of the most important aspects of every photograph. It is a prominent element for photographers to keep in mind as they take pictures. Considering light, therefore, is perhaps the most fundamental do during photography. Know the primary source of light for each potential photograph, and be as sure not to overload the photograph with light or to starve it of light. Be familiar with the shadows in your photograph and the texture they may cause. Also be careful when shooting directly into a source of light because, for example, taking a picture directly of the sun can damage your camera.

When photographing people and places, make sure to understand the laws and legal issues of the country and city you are in. Also, some places prohibit photography. For example, most airports prohibit photography in and around security checkpoints, and many correctional facilities do not allow photography without explicit authorization from the Sheriff, director or warden. Some cities, too, do not allow photography on their public transportation systems. Penalties for violating these laws also vary from place to place. Ensure you are not breaking any laws by asking a law enforcement officer nearby before taking photos.

When photographing others, whether they are clients -- for example, clients sitting for portraits -- or people you want to photograph because of happenstance. Remember to treat them in a way that does not detract from your photography. For instance, being untoward and insistent towards a street performer may result in the performer prohibiting you from taking photos or stopping the performance all together.

Remember to turn off your camera to preserve battery life when you are not using it. Do not leave your camera unattended in public spaces. Do not put a strap on your camera that is damaged and may tear or damage the camera. Store and transport your camera in padded and secure cases so as not to damage it.
