What Is Needed for a Photographer's Studio Set Up?

Photographers who want more control over their photography may choose to set up their own studio. Studios provide a dedicated space for a photographer, regardless of the photographer's specialty. A photography studio doesnt have to be a set size, however, an ideal studio must contain the right equipment.

Light Source

A photographers studio should contain multiple light sources. A studio area with a window is advantageous because it provides sunlight or natural light. A studio requires other light sources such as hot lights, warm lights and cold lights. Hot lights are lights that remain on and produce heat, usually tungsten lights. Warm lights produce less heat; fluorescent lights typically power warm lights. Cold lights, also known as strobes or flashes, operate for brief periods.

Lighting Accessories

Besides lighting, a studio needs equipment that can manipulate light. Reflectors are one inexpensive option. These sheets come in different colors such as gold, white and silver. Reflectors direct light back to the subject of the photo, reducing shadows. Another type of lighting accessory, an umbrella, diffuses light. Like reflectors, umbrellas reduce shadowing in photos. Light meters are a needed piece of studio equipment; light meters are more accurate than the meters built into cameras. When choosing lighting accessories, photographers should choose accessories that can withstand the heat of lighting equipment.

Tripods and Camera Stands

Cameras require support to ensure that photos are clear and sharp. Tripods are the most common accessory used to support cameras. These objects support cameras with a tripod head and three lockable legs. Some photographers, however, invest in studio stands or studio tripods. These stands are more stable and expensive than regular tripods. They also contain wheels that make them more maneuverable. Another bonus is that these stands dont have to be carried around.

Backdrops and Props

A studio isnt complete without accessories that support the photographer. Backdrops provide backgrounds for photos. Backdrops range from neutral to scenic. They can also be made by the photographer or purchased from a backdrop supplier. Some studios also provide props such as forks, sofas, and flowers. The type of props and backgrounds photographers use differ depending on the subject of the photo.
