How an Eye Looks at a Picture

When you focus on an object or a photograph, reflected wavelengths of light bombard the eye. The wavelengths pass through the cornea, the aqueous humor and the pupil, which is controlled by the iris to allow the right amount of light in. Wavelengths continue through the crystalline lens, to the retina where light is converted to electrical signals by cells called rods and cones. These signals are sent to the brain, which in turn tells you what you've seen.

Focusing

Look across the room and focus on an object, such as a sign or a piece of furniture. As you shift from what's in front of you to what's farther away, the ciliary muscles, which hold the crystalline lens in place relax, flattening the lens, allowing you to see far away. As you bring your attention back to a magazine in front of you the muscles contract, thickening the lens, enabling you to see closer.

Eye Works Like a Camera

Focus your attention on your computer. Wavelengths of light bombard your eyes and your pupils adjust. The reflected light strikes the retina just as a camera lens allows the right amount of light to enter at the right speed to strike the film. The human eye, like the camera, doesn't see objects, it sees light.

Seeing Color

Reflected light is the actual color of the object.
Reflected light is the actual color of the object.

Look at the image of the car. What you're seeing is the reflected wavelengths of yellow and red. All other light wavelengths are absorbed by the image. Each color has a different wavelength. "Do you want to learn digital photography approaches that bring professional photographers to where they are today? Well, The Top Secret Photography Techniques would guide you out in doing so. For instance, red has a long wavelength and blue has a short wavelength. It is this wavelength that reaches the cones, which pick up color and fine detail.

Seeing in Low Light

Open a magazine to a color photograph and note the clarity of details and richness of color. Move to an area with little light or turn the lights down. Notice the difference in clarity and sharpness of color. Depending on the amount of light, the photograph will have more shades of gray and colors will be dull. Details will be less clear; this is because rods pick up monochrome vision in poor light; together with cones, rods help your eyes pick up as much it can, no matter the light conditions.

Putting it All Together

Scan that same photograph in good light, moving your focus from object to object. Depending on the photograph's clarity, you can pick up fine detail and the rest of the photo may blur. Look at a black-and-white photo, paying attention to the details. The cones pick up the fine details and various shades of gray.
