How to Build a Panel of Lights

Light panels are flat surfaces with lights strung across them that provide illumination for various purposes; they are often used to create lighting for photography. Lighting plays a major role in how the photographer composes a scene -- in fact, the word photography means writing with light. Lighting panels can produce illumination that can be manipulated to create visual effects, such as a soft glow. Unfortunately, commercial lighting panels might not fulfill the needs of your photography studio, so consider creating your own.

Instructions

Determine how much light you wish to produce and the amount of distance across which you want to produce light. Determine the dimensions of the wooden panel; either purchase wood that is already cut to those dimensions or find wood that is larger than those dimensions and use the measurements to mark where you must cut the wood.

Use a saw to cut off the excess wood. Set the wood down with the finished side faceup. Use a saber saw to cut downward into the wood, separating the unneeded part of the board from the rest.

Locate LED strips that are long enough to travel from one edge of the panel to the other. Buy enough strips to fill the entire panel. Glue the strips to the panel using superglue. Hold the lights to the panel until the glue dries.

Pull on the lights gently to ensure that they stay in position. Position the LED lights so that the power side of the strip is on the same side for each strip. Attach the lights to the control unit.
