Kids Photography Lessons

Part of the fun with hobbies is in learning new techniques to help you create the final products you see in your head. Photography is no different. The availability of digital cameras has made it possible for kids to get started in photography without the worry of costs previously associated with film and developing. As such, a few lessons go a long way.

Experimenting

Teach your child to experiment with photography. Beginners and children have a tendency to shoot the same things over and over until they feel they got it right. It is important to teach how to introduce variety to the shots. Have your child photograph objects from different sides and from different perspectives such as up high and down low. Have your child step in closer, or step back for a wider angle shot. Teach the child to use different camera settings to achieve different results.

Rule of Thirds

There is a simple principle in photography called the Rule of Thirds. The Rule of Thirds simply means to take the object you wish to shoot and line up the object on the intersecting third points. This can be achieved by imagining three rows of three on your lens view. Tell your child to imagine a tic-tac-toe board so he can visualize the three rows of the three in terms he understands. The object or point of interest, then, should be centered in that middle row, in the middle box. Placing the image or point of interest off center can also be a powerful effect.

Different Modes

Teach your child about the different shooting modes available on your camera. Many digital cameras offer a dial that allows for quick changing of shooting modes. Shooting modes can include portrait modes, sports modes, candlelight modes, landscape modes and many more. Talk to your child about these modes, then find objects to practice shooting so that the child can learn how using these modes can change the shot. Learning the different modes will also help to teach how focal distance, light and movement can alter a shot.

Backgrounds

An important part of photography is understanding the effect of backgrounds. The background for your point of interest can enhance your shot, but can also be distracting if there is too much clutter. Teach your child to scan the background of the object or point of interest he or she wishes to shoot. Have them check for too many distractions. Perhaps changing the angle of the shot or shooting the shot from a different angle can change the background to a more pleasing effect.
