How to Make Cardboard Sheets for Photos

With so many options available today between commercial photo albums and digital or online photo displays, its easy to overlook cardboard as a photo album material. However, cardboard sheets are a useful material to use when making homemade photo albums for the pictures you treasure. Cardboard is accessible and easy to cut into the dimensions you need for your album. When combined with card stock and photo paper, you can create your own lasting memories.

Instructions

    1

Decide how large you want your photo album to be. Consider 11-by-14 or 8-by-10-inches, depending on how many photos you want to display and how large you want the pages to be.

    2

Use a ruler and pencil to mark out the dimensions of your photo album on the cardboard. Cut the cardboard to size with a utility knife. Cut two pieces of identically-sized cardboard covers - one for the front and one for the back of your album.

    3

Fill the inside of the album with card stock, cut to size. Set the size of the card stock sheets as 1 inch smaller in length and width than the cardboard covers.

    4

Cut pieces of archival paper, either plain or patterned, to fit on top of the card stock. Apply a layer of spray adhesive to the card stock. Press pieces of archival photo paper onto the card stock and let the adhesive dry for 20 minutes.

    5

Cover the cardboard sheets in card stock and complementary patterned or plain archival paper, cut to size. Use spray adhesive to attach the card stock to the cardboard and the archival paper to the card stock.

    6

Print the photos you want to place in the album onto photo paper. Glue archival quality photo corners onto the inside pages, where you want to insert photos. Let the glue dry for 20 minutes. Place the photos into the photo corners.

    7

Place one of the card stock covers down on a flat surface. Set all of your card stock album sheets on top of it. Lay the front cardboard cover down on top of the stack of sheets. Use a hole puncher to create two or three holes along the left edge of the stack of sheets.

    8

Thread a strand of leather rope or twine through the holes you punched. If you are using three holes, cut a short strand to tie through each hole. If you have two holes, consider weaving one strand through both and tying a knot in the leather or twine on the back of the album. Tie a second knot in all of your twine pieces to secure the ties and keep them from coming unraveled.
