Five Ways to Be a Successful Photographer

Many people take photographs, be they with digital cameras, cell phones, disposable film cameras or professional studio equipment. However, professional photographers have developed their picture-taking skills to the point where they can receive payment for their abilities. Becoming a successful photographer takes not only hard work and skill, but also proper planning and a willingness for networking and self-promotion.

Much like athletes must maintain their bodies for optimal performance, photographers must practice to hone their picture-taking skills. Photographers should take pictures at every opportunity they get and develop their skills at capturing images of a variety of subjects. Expanding your skills by photographing objects, people or events that you're not used to can not only help expand your skills, but potentially illuminate new ways to take photos of the subjects that you are interested in.

Promoting your work will help as many people as possible see your photography. With the advent of social media like Facebook and Twitter and photography websites like Flickr, photographers can connect with other people and have avenues to show their work directly to people who are willing to look. Social media helps photographers to connect with fellow photographers and to develop a following. Not everyone who looks at your work will be willing to pay you, but building a following and networking can potentially lead to lucrative opportunities.

Goals are a necessity for any endeavor. However, photographers should set specific goals such as figuring out what kinds of pictures they want to take, how to get paid for taking those kinds of pictures and what kind of success they hope to achieve. Set specific, not general, goals and create strategies for achieving them. People tend to have different standards for what qualifies as success, so figuring out what success means to you can help put you on the road to it.

While many photographers can sustain themselves on simply being paid to take pictures for their clients, others may resort to publishing books of their photography or selling prints in order to make extra money off their work. Photographers would do best not to underestimate the value of their output because there may be consumers willing to buy physical copies of their work. Additionally, having a physical product to send out is another way to promote yourself outside of Internet social media.

In attempting to seek success, aspiring photographers should figure out just what their specialty is, whether it be something as broad as artistic photography or something as specific as nature photography or wedding photography. Deciding what you want to do professionally and putting together a portfolio to match can help in finding a job. A potential employer or client should be able to look at your portfolio and decide if your particular skill set will fit his needs.
