Tips on Photographing Toddlers

Whether you are a professional photographer or a parent wanting to do your own photography, getting a good shot of a toddler can be difficult. There is no trick that will work for every toddler; rather you have to use the toddlers personality and temperament as the foundation for the type of photo you take.

Entertaining Toddlers

Toddlers are often temperamental, moody and hyper during photo shoots, making it difficult to get good shots. Entertain the toddler to get pictures his parents will love. Spend time with him before taking pictures; be friendly, make him laugh and play on the ground with some toys. This will entertain and relax him, making the photo shoot go more smoothly. Ask his mom to bring in some of his favorite toys for the photo shoot to create more natural poses.

Ground-Level Shots

Take several pictures of the toddler by getting down on the ground and seeing things from her perspective. This is essential in getting up-close, eye-level shots, which are pleasing to the parents and also more artistic. Sit or lie on the ground with the camera pointing straight at the toddler and take several shots of her from varied angles.

Walls and Corners

Toddlers can get hyperactive in a new environment of a photo studio, which makes the walls and corners of your studio helpful. When he tries to run, guide him toward a corner of the room and take shots of the entire experience. Get some interesting shots of him sitting or standing against walls; shots that look great in black-and-white.

Keep Shooting

Keep shooting no matter what the toddler is doing, whether laughing and playing or crying and screaming. Each moment of the photo shoot is an opportunity to create pictures the parents will treasure. Remember to capture candid shots as well. When taking photos of a mischeivous toddler, ask an assistant or parent to calm down the child while you continue to shoot.

Props and Toys

One of the most important things is to have plenty of entertainment. Entertainment can include stuffed animals, blocks, balls, noise-makers, books, dolls and other toys. These toys act as distractions for the child while you take memorable pictures and the toys become props in the photos as well.

Settings

Get pictures of toddlers by capturing shots in a more natural environment, such as at a local park on playground equipment, at home in a playroom or around other kids and family members.
