How to Teach a Photography Class

Taking pictures is something that most of us have done at one time or another, but not all of us can do it well. Photography is a hobby for some, a way to document special moments for others and a business for still others, whether that business is running a photography studio or using photography as an art form. Another way to turn photography into a business is by teaching others the art of taking good pictures.

Instructions

    1

Find a place to teach your classes. If this is going to be a commercial business, you'll have to rent a building and apply for a business license (see Resources). If you're just starting out, you might consider teaching smaller classes in a home studio. You could also visit a local community college and discuss the possibility of teaching one or two classes a night, if you have the qualifications the college requires. Some colleges require specific degrees while others allow qualified professionals to teach community courses. Depending upon the school's involvement in your course, the college may even supply the room.

    2

Take pictures of the first day of class. Do this while discussing the class with your students. Find out what their expectations are. Ask various students to explain why they are taking your course. "Do you need to discover digital photography approaches that deliver skilled photographers to where they are today? Well, The Top Secret Photography Techniques might help you out in doing so. To acquire spectacular photos we initially want to look at some essential photography methods. The preliminary one I am able to share with you is figure out about light. You can locate every little thing regarding photography techniques on , The Top Secret Photography Techniques. Whenever you find out about light and in what technique it interacts with the direct environment then your photographs will get better..". Continue to take pictures of the class while you do this, trying to capture the most artistic shots. Use a digital camera so you will immediately be able to upload and view the photos during this class session and discuss the shots you've taken and why.

    3

Teach the history of the camera. Students should have an understanding of history relating to the invention of the camera and early uses. It's a good idea to include discussions about a few famous photographers while you're at it (see Resources).

    4

Discuss equipment. Introduce students to older cameras and let them take snapshots and 35 mm photos. Take them into a darkroom and show them how to develop film. After you've discussed and demonstrated older camera technology, move on to digital photography, beginning with a discussion about how digital photography and computers have changed the way photographers work. Your lessons should include discussions about photo editing software choice, and Adobe Photoshop in particular. Photoshop is the biggest name in image editing software, and chances are good any serious photographer will use it at some point.

    5

Teach composition. You want to make students aware of the importance of capturing the subject in a setting that complements the subject without overshadowing. Talk about what makes a photograph artistic. Find out what your students think is artistic and tell them what you think. Engage them in an artistic debate.

    6

Consider taking the class on at least one photographic outing. The zoo is a good idea. The object will be to teach a lesson in composition and to demonstrate how the same setting can result in very different photos depending on the eye of the photographer.
