Lenses Needed for Photographing Rock Bands

Photographing rock bands while they are performing during a concert can be difficult for photographers. Challenges of low lighting, high stages and constant crowds can make capturing a good photo difficult. Knowing the correct lenses to use in these challenging situations makes it easier to snap an outstanding photo.

Fast Lenses

"Fast" lenses is a term used to describe camera lenses which have high maximum aperture levels. The aperture of a lens describes the width of the hole inside the lens that allows light through. These are particularly useful for low light settings, such as clubs where rock concerts are held. Fast lenses are beneficial to photographers shooting rock bands because they may not require the use of a flash, which is often prohibited at concerts, and they produce shallow depths of field. This makes the band members, no matter how they are spaced, appear closer to each other. A fast lens is any lens with an aperture greater than f/2.8.

Prime Lenses

Prime lenses are photo lenses with a fixed focal length. A focal length is described in millimeters. If a lens has the ability to reach higher focal lengths, such as 200 mm, it can record an image of an object from farther away. The benefit to using one of these lenses at a rock concert is that it allows the photographer to concentrate on other aspects of the image, such as exposure and composition. Zoom lenses aren't ideal for photographing rock bands, because they produce a less sharp image.

Wide Angle Lenses

Wide angle lenses make the objects in a photo appear as if there is greater distance between them. Instead of looking like the band members are on top of each other as if they are performing on a small stage, a wide angle lens exaggerates the distance between the musicians, creating the illusion that they're on a bigger stage.

Telephoto Lenses

Telephoto lenses are capable of variable focal lengths. They are beneficial to rock band photographers because they provide a focused zoom on a particular detail or feature of the concert, such as a facial expression or instrument detail.
