Glossy objects, such as those made from glass and metal, can be challenging to photograph. Their surfaces naturally reflect light, which creates glare when the object isn't photographed properly. By using the appropriate lighting, backdrop, camera settings and equipment, you can take clear photos of glossy objects without any unwanted reflections.
Determine the Angle of Reflection
Every glossy object reflects light in a certain direction. The direction the reflected light travels depends on the location of the light source and the shape of the object being photographed. If you know how the object reflects light, you can position your camera, the light source or the object at an angle that prevents the light from bouncing off the object and into the camera's lens. To determine how the light is reflected, point the light at the object and look for a surface displaying the reflected light. If there aren't any nearby surfaces, position a white card at different locations around the object to see the reflected light.
Diffuse the Lighting
If you point light directly at a glossy object, the light will be reflected and picked up by the camera, creating glare. To decrease glare while lighting the object, diffuse the light by placing tissue paper between the object being photographed and the light source. Do not place the paper directly over the light, since the paper might burn. If you don't have tissue paper, a thin sheet of fabric might also work.
Choose an Appropriate Backdrop
Glossy objects reflect the colors and patterns of surrounding objects. Before taking a photograph, examine the glossy object to see what is being reflected. If it's reflecting too many external colors, position surrounding objects further from the glossy object or use a neutral backdrop, such as a white table or wall.
Adjust the Camera's Settings Manually
If the photo is too bright or dark, adjust the camera's shutter speed and aperture manually. The shutter speed, which is measured in seconds, and aperture, which is measured in f/stops, determine how much light enters the camera. If the photo is too dark, decrease the shutter speed or increase the aperture. If the photo is too bright, increase the shutter speed or decrease the aperture.
Use a Tripod
If you need to use a slow shutter speed or if your photos are blurry, put your camera on a tripod. The tripod keeps the camera steady, decreasing the risk of blur. If you're taking photos of the object from below or above the object, use a tripod with a tilting camera mount.
Position White Cards Around the Object
If the glossy object looks dull in the photographs, place white foam cards around the object. The object will reflect the color white, making it look brighter. The resulting photo might also bring out more of the object's details.
