How to Make a Light Box for Photographing Small Objects

Buying a ready-made light box or pop-up light tent for photographing small objects can cost $100 or more. That's a steep price tag for what's essentially a fabric box with a hole in the front. You can duplicate the same product on a shoestring budget; under $10 in many cases. This project will take you about an hour to complete once you have all your supplies organized.

Instructions

Trim the flaps out of the open end of your cardboard box. Set it open end up.

Measure and mark a 2-inch border all the way around each side of the box on the outside. Don't mark anything on the bottom. Poke your scissors into the center of one side and cut out to the border you drew, then finish cutting along the border and remove the inner portion you just cut out. Repeat on the other three sides. You should now have a flat, unbroken bottom, a two-inch hollow frame on four sides, and an open top.

Mark lines from edge to edge of the posterboard, spaced 2 inches apart. Cut along the lines, creating strips of posterboard 2 inches wide. Glue these strips inside your box, making sure the marked side is against the cardboard so the marks won't show.

Cut another piece of posterboard as wide as the box but much taller. Slide it into the box so that it curves from the forward bottom edge to the back top edge, and trim off any excess that sticks up out of the box. Make sure not to crease the posterboard.

Hold the white cloth against the left side of the box and cut out a piece that covers the entire hole plus the 2-inch cardboard border around it. Glue the cloth in place and repeat on the right and back sides. Cover the top of the box too, cutting the fabric so it hangs down enough on either side to be glued in place. Leave the front of the box open.
