Digital cameras allow the separation of the image as it hits the lens from the viewfinder or digital display so you can view a camera remotely, like you would view a video security monitor. This allows you to take photographs around corners of from higher or lower angles than normal, or it can mean seeing into the water with a pole camera.
Proprietary Pole and Camera Systems
Pole cameras give underwater views to people on land. They are often proprietary systems, matching a custom camera to a custom pole or pole system that often includes couplers to help you reach into more underwater places. These systems come in kits, such as Enhanced Imaging Technology's Aqua-Cam, designed for conveniently surveying boat hulls. The Aqua-Cam needs no tools for adjustment as the telescoping pole and the pivoting camera wand are designed for hand-tightening.
Stand-Alone Camera Poles, Couplers and Accessories
Other manufacturers also make proprietary pole and camera systems, but Aqua-Vu also sells their camera poles individually along with a large number of accessories. Many manufacturers make only camera poles with extension couplings. The hardware tends to be designed for hand-tightening, but there are standard nuts, bolts, allen screws and machine screws. There is also apparatus for wire management since these setups send the image to a remote displays by waterproof wiring, usually on the other end of the pole.
Divers' Toolkit
Before you go shooting photos, make an inventory of every fastener in your setup and if you didn't buy a kit that includes the tools you need -- bring them along. A divers' toolkit is probably a good approximation of what you'll need. Most divers' toolkits take into account the anti-corrosive properties their tools require. Most have another very handy tool for this application: zip-ties. Zip-ties are nylon straps that ratchet as you tighten them. Some can be undone and reused. Some must be removed with nippers, which you should also have. Any tool in stainless steel or coated with an anti-corrosive is desirable.
Multi-Tools
Couplings often use set allen-type set screws and other small hardware. This combination of needs suggests an multi-tool like a Swiss army knife or ParkTool. ParkTool makes a variety of outdoor sports tools. Among them are multi-tools similar to Swiss army knives, but geared toward skiing and snowboarding, so moisture has been considered in the design and it has a lot of utility packed into a single tool. If you can find a multi-tool that will operate any mechanical fasteners on your camera pole/coupler setup in a multi-tool, that's your best option -- and throw in some zip-ties for cable management.
