What to Use as a Background for a Glamour Shot

Glamour shots are portraits designed to make the subject look luminous and dramatic. Although glamour shots focus on the subject's face, the background can make a difference in setting the photo's tone. As you choose background options, look for scenes that will support the atmosphere of the photo without taking attention from the person.

To enhance the luxurious feeling of a glamour shot, use textured material for a backdrop. Choose fabric with a rich texture like thick velvet or brocade. The material will reflect the light to create a glow and visual interest in the background without overpowering the subject. Have the model dress in a color that contrasts with the background so she does not appear to have a floating head.

If you want a stylized, dramatic feeling in your glamour photo, look for locations that have bold architectural details. Brick walls, libraries with light and steel details or windowed buildings all have strong lines that add a touch of interest to a photo. Shoot the subject so the lines radiate out from his body.
