Entertainers and models use portraits called headshots to gain employment and publicize their work. Creating headshots requires the photographer to pay attention to details such as lighting, the subject's expression and industry standards for different types of headshots. When a headshot helps a client get work, that client is more willing to recommend the photographer who created it.
Headshot
A headshot is any photograph used by an actor, other entertainer or model for publicity, a press kit, a resume or an audition. According to professional photographer Daniel Colegrove, the headshot must look exactly like the person who commissioned it. If it doesn't, entertainment agents or casting directors may not hire the person because the person they were expecting and person who showed up just don't match. Typically the headshots for actors and entertainers are printed on 8-by-12-inch paper, while headshots used for models are printed on 9-by-12-inch paper.
Types
Entertainers generally require three types of headshots. The commercial headshot is an image of the performer's head and upper shoulders that shows what the entertainer actually looks like. The commercial heashot depicts his face and hair in simple, direct lighting and captures his personality. The theatrical headshot shows the performer in dramatic lighting and typically depicts the performer "in character." Actors are often shown on a stage or movie set, while musicians are usually shown performing. The glamour headshot is similar to the theatrical headshot but places an emphasis on physical appearance and sex appeal. They are often used as promotional material for musicians, singers and dancers and resume photos for actors auditioning for television.
Lighting Setups
According to Colegrove, there are four common ways to light a headshot. Using natural lighting draws attention to the subject's eyes and is the preferred method. However, it is impossible to control. Model lighting is broad, flat lighting created with a lighting device called a light bank placed behind the photographer while the subject is about 6 feet from the camera. In the classic three light set up, the subject is about 8 feet from the camera. Her hair is lit from behind and above, a light bank is placed at a 45 degree angle to her face. A small light called a kicker is placed on the opposite side at a 90 degree angle to her face. The Hollywood three light set up strongly emphasizes the performer's features. The hair is lit from above while the subject is brightly lit from one side and deeply shadowed on the other.
Poses and Expression
Instead of "posing" the subject, the photographer should create expressions by engaging him in a casual conversation. For example, the photographer can get the subject to smile by cracking a joke or create a serious gaze by discussing a serious question. Many of the hundreds of pictures shot during the headshot session are really just a tool for helping the entertainer relax and develop a rapport with the photographer.
