Schooling Needed for a Digital Photographer

Digital photography combines technology and art to create exceptional photographs that sometimes cannot be achieved by using analog equipment. A digital photographer not only needs to have an eye for a good angle but also technological knowledge to manipulate digital equipment as well as applications, such as a digital camera and photography applications. Aside from acquiring a high school diploma, a person who seriously pursues this career can obtain certification from a recognized photography certification agency after training. Technical proficiency is acquired and is usually integrated into business and design courses.

Online Photography Programs

Like other courses, several legitimate art institutions offer online courses on digital photography. Such schooling allows a photography student to choose how, how often and when to go about pursuing his online education. Institutes usually offer open-type education or e-learning, wherein a course-taker needs only to pay for and complete required online academic work. He is then issued a certification of completion of the online course. Some of the institutions offering digital photography courses include The Art Institutes, Full Sail University and Penn Foster Career School.

Technical, Vocational, Trade Schools or Programs

A number of design and technology schools also offer a certificate in digital photography. For example, Hallmark Institute of Photography in Massachusetts provides a photography education program to be accomplished in ten months. Some of the courses included in their program include basic photography, visual arts, lighting techniques, digital imaging and digital capture.

Digital photography courses are offered in other schools as well, including Harrington College of Design, International Academy of Design and Technology and Brooks Institute. In addition to these, some photography equipment manufacturers occasionally provide training for aspiring digital photographers. Nikon School, for instance, offers a seminar-type program or class conducted by professional photographers.

Community Colleges and Universities

Everest Colleges, American Intercontinental University, Northern Arizona University, and the University of Washington are but a few of the schools listed that offer photography, video and film under their performing and visual arts curriculum. Most of these learning institutes offer digital photography as either an undergraduate (associate bachelor) or a non-degree (coursework for certification) program.

A number of universities that offer career programs in digital photography even have Master of Arts or Master of Fine Arts in Photography. The main differences between these courses are the advance concepts that a digital photographer can learn. For example, advance digital manipulation and capture is typically included in an associate's degree but may not be included in a short certificate program.

Career Paths and Continuing Education

Professional digital photographers normally work freelance or as self-employed individuals. They may also opt to become photo contributors to stock photo and advertising agencies, magazine and newspaper publishers. Digital photography is a specialized field that is usable in a number of significant areas, such as photojournalism or news, scientific, industrial, sports, commercial, fine arts and portrait photography. It is also useful for photo editing and teaching jobs. Like other careers mainly related to technology and digital equipment, digital photographers typically need to enroll or take short courses to improve their knowledge on newer technologies. However, this type of continuing education is solely the photographers choice.
